Plex

Highlighted app from the App Library

Watch anytime, anywhere with the Plex app

With more than 50,000 free titles, movies, live TV, streaming music, podcasts, and personal media on consumer's own server, Plex gives users one place to find and access the media that matters most to them.

Discover

With Discover, a recently introduced feature by Plex, TV viewers can discover and search movies and TV shows—including Plex's free content or content from other paid or free streaming services—from anywhere. Users are able to create a personalized watchlist that has the ability to find where any title is streaming. If the movie or show is streaming on a service that the consumer has, they can launch it from Plex, reducing time spent searching for something to watch.

Develop once, deploy widely with LightningTM

With an ambition to be on every device that has a screen, Plex needed a solution that allowed for a common app development and deployment framework. That is why Plex added the LightningTM app development framework and Software Development Kit (SDK) to their ecosystem – making it the perfect open, lightweight programming language for building high-performing TV apps. Lightning efficiently extends Plex’s reach across a wide variety of platforms, like legacy and next-gen set-top boxes, smart TVs, streaming devices, and game consoles, bringing Plex closer to their strategy of ubiquitous app deployment.

“Lightning enables us to run the Plex App across many different platforms and devices, like set-top boxes, PlayStation, Xbox, Samsung Tizen, LG webOS, and macOS, saving costs for development and maintenance.” – Shawn Eldridge, VP Strategic Alliances and Content for Plex

Lightning is optimized for embedded devices, and offers superior performance on both high- and low-end devices. It is highly portable, so it can run on any device with a browser, and common web standards are used for ease of development and deployment. Furthermore, Lightning expanded the list of available deployment devices for Plex, as Lightning requires a much smaller payload on the device, compared to a native or HTML5 app.

"The Lightning-based Plex app allows us to offer consistent, native experiences that meet our customers across platforms. It opened-up device availability, as it requires lower memory usage than our HTML5-app versions did, while having great performance, and taking full advantage of visuals." – Shawn Eldridge, VP Strategic Alliances and Content at Plex
